Tapotement
Tapotement, Tapping, or Body Percussion is a sports massage technique that can simultaneously activate and calm nervous systems with rhythmic anticipation and contact. The space seems to invite the nervous system to listen with sensory receptivity and the contact lands weighty intentionally applied attention to the muscles. It can feel like physical affirmation over any over again that opening up to feel is met with beneficial and solid contact. The tapping can shake up the rigid fixation of a freeze state of being, and provide positive engagement. Fingertips, open palms, the pinky-side edge of the hands, and loosely closed fists as if holding a small seashell in hand can all be used to create different sensations and points of contact. Some of what is called stimming in association with neurodivergence is naturally occurring body percussion or rhythmic movements that do something with additional nervous system energy, especially if the person is in an environment where they are not able to run, walk around, dance, move etc. Body percussion can also be a means of noticing the level of activation based on whatever speed or rhythm of percussion, tapping, or shaking is happening at. This pace can be intentionally slowed down, the way that people can consciously slow their breathing in meditation or yoga to bring relaxation and homeostasis back to the body.
